An impulse is transmitted from one neurone to the next at a structure called a synapes.
Synapses occur between the swollen tips (synaptic knobs) of terminals of the axon of one neurone, the pre-synaptic neurone, and a dendrite or cell body of another neurone, the post-synaptic neurone. At the synapse the neurones are in extremely close contact, but with a tiny gap between them (known as the synaptic cleft), normally about ~20nm wide.
